What is Smart IoT about?
Smart IoT is driven by rich data (image, sound, motion, vital signs,..) produced by a large number of low cost battery operated sensors nodes. Because of their inherent richness, an endless number of different applications can take benefit of this data, unlike today’s IoT data.
What does Smart IoT change?
In today’s IoT, sensor data is uploaded as is and analysed in the cloud. As long as this is little data, it is OK energy wise. But in the Smart IoT driven by rich data, uploading all data is just a non starter energy wise. Moreover, as most IoT data is either redundant or irrelevant, reducing its amount can be handled by locally selecting only the meaningful data to be uploaded. It requires processing and classification, quite a heavy job. Another issue in some cases is the privacy issue that can only be managed with significant processing in the node before any upload.
What is an Iot Processor about?
An IoT Processor is a processor that is easily and openly programmable and has the computing power, the energy efficiency and the low cost that makes Smart IoT possible.
GAP8 is the first of this sort.
And what about communication?
After meaningful data has been selected, it still represents in most cases far more data than what current IoT networks have been designed for, energy and data rate wise. A high data rate, typically 1Mb/s over a long range, is required, which imposes Orthogonal Frequency Modulation. But unfortunately, OFDM is well known for being very power inefficient.
GreenOFDM and SW Defined Modem
Our GreenOFDM, which runs in software on GAP8, makes OFDM as efficient as any other modulation.
In addition, any known IoT communication protocol, including its modem, error correction and security, can run on GAP8. It makes it easy to deploy GreenOFDM as an additional modem that can nicely be integrated with widely adopted protocols while bringing significant energy saving. And in a world of long lasting communication protocol fragmentation, being also able to support multiple protocols with the same Hardware is a powerful benefit.
Furthermore, one can upgrade a GAP8 sensor node data analysis and communication capabilities after it has been deployed in the field. With years of battery life, this is another powerful benefit, if only for security.
